Bangle Bracelet History

As well as being a popular bracelet style of choice today, the bangle dates back to as early as 2600 BC. Although modern bangles are seen to be the ultimate stylish accessory, they also hold cultural significance across many different regions of the world and have been found in ancient Mayan, Mauryan, Roman and Indian ruins.

Jewellery is traditionally seen as a symbol of status and wealth and the bangle bracelet no doubt has had many different meanings over the years. As one of the oldest forms of jewellery that has ever been discovered, bangles were traditionally made from terracotta, stone, shells, copper, glass and other similar materials.

Although glass and coloured bangles still do play a part in some cultural traditions today, they are now more typically made from silver, gold and rose gold and can be worn as an everyday or evening accessory.

What Is The Difference Between A Bracelet And A Bangle?

Bangles are made from rigid materials such as silver or gold and are traditionally circular or semi-circular in shape. Whereas bracelets are flexible in movement and can be made from a variety of materials including silver or gold, chain links, beads or cord and more often than not feature a clasp or fastening.

Types Of Bangle Bracelets

There are three main types of bangle bracelets to choose from, each as beautiful as the next. Although every bangle can be made from different materials and feature details such as semi-precious stones and pendants, there are three very distinct styles:

  • Infinity Bangle: The infinity bangle is made from one solid circular shape and features no fastening. The hand and fingers are folded inwards before sliding through the hole in the middle of the bangle. Once the bangle is on the wrist, the hand and fingers help to keep the bangle in place.
  • Open Bangle: The open bangle is made from an almost solid circular shape, typically somewhere in between a crescent moon and a full circle. The metal of an open bangle can usually be bent open slightly to allow the wrist through the gap and then squeezed back together again to tighten.
  • Hinged bangle: The hinged bangle appears to have a solid circular shape similar to that of the infinity bangle but instead features a hinge and clasp at opposite sides so that it can be opened, closed and fastened with ease.

How To Wear A Bangle

There are many different ways to wear a bangle and it all comes down to personal preference. That being said if you do need some styling tips on how to wear a bangle, then we are here to help:

  • Wear your bangle bracelet at the base of your wrist. Wearing one or multiple bangles at the base of your wrist is the perfect way to accessorise your look all year round. In summer opt for bangles featuring pendants and charms or in winter you can layer your bangle over a long sleeve top or jumper.

  • Wear your bangle bracelet halfway up your forearm. Wearing your bangle bracelet in this way is great for creating a boho festival look and it means that your bangle won’t be moving up and down your wrist all the time.

  • Wear multiple bangles at once. Wearing multiple bangle bracelets at once is the perfect way to create a Y2K look. Not only will they look beautiful paired together but they will also make a calming chiming noise when the bangles naturally move up and down on your wrist.

  • Wear your bangle bracelet solo. If your vibe is more minimalistic and chic then wearing one bangle is the best way to go. Clean and simple it is the perfect way to elevate your look.
